INTRODUCTION
A flowing, diagonal scarf, inspired by the Ancient Spice Route.
This was a sea route that sailed from East to West, laden with aromatic spices. Snippets of history about these eastern spices and the spice trade are given throughout the pattern.

Working with 9 different stitch patterns, soothing garter sections and spice-themed crystal and garter motifs, this scarf will stay appetising and engaging to the end!

The pattern is a slanted, diagonal Scarf using fingering weight / 4-ply yarn.
It is knit straight, with increases and decreases on alternate rows, with integrated border and edge stitches.

Consisting of 29 sections, the first 14 are repeated in reverse for sections 16 to 29, with a middle section 15.

The original sample is knit with hand dyed yarn from @fruitfulfusion who released a #January2023 yarn box inspired by the Spice Route. I’ve taken her lead and tranformed those colours into a similarly inspired scarf. The name ‘Masala’ translates as ‘spices’ in most South Asian languages.

This is very much your individual project. You can use colours that blend as a gradient or use contrasting colours to really make your scarf sizzle! Use one colour throughout and make the crystal motifs a feature.
You can even use multiple scraps for any one section, as the row count is always given for each part, making this pattern a real stash buster.
